March on Awards
March On’s Vivian Malone Courage Award is bestowed biennially to honor an individual who exemplifies the grit and determination needed to speak truth to power in the realm of racial justice.
The award is named for the late Vivian Malone Jones, the first African American to graduate from the University of Alabama. In 1963, she was one of two African American students to defy Governor George Wallace who “stood in the schoolhouse door” to bar their entry to registration.
In honor of the late Vivian Malone
The award is named in honor of the late Vivian Malone, who defied segregationist Governor George Wallace by enrolling at the University of Alabama and becoming its first African American graduate.
This year’s award is presented to Michelle Browder, American artist and activist known for her historical tours, murals and sculptures in Montgomery, particularly the Mothers of Gynecology Monument. This year’s Vivian Malone Courage award is a print of an original painting by award-winning abstract and figurative artist Avis Collins Robinson.
